The 3 Axis System |
The system is made up of three high precision rotary drives that together make up a three degree of freedom gimbal. Each drive has a position accuracy of 0.7 millidegrees and has an encoder attached with a resolution of 1 microdegrees. The rate resolution of each drive is 0.002 deg/sec with a stability of 0.0001%. This highly accurate gimbal is used to calibrate and test Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) by rotating the gimbal in a known trajectory and reference this to the INS solution of the rotation. From this the following INS errors can hereby be identified: The biases, scale factors, and misalignments of both the accelerometer and gyroscope triad. The inner axis rotates inside a temperature chamber. It is hereby also possible to calibrate and test INS systems at different temperatures. |
